Until the construction of San Luca Sanctuary, the Montovolo’s one was for many centuries the most important devotional center in Bologna
The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Consolation takes place within the Provincial Park of Montovolo-Vigese, in the municipality of Grizzana Morandi (Bologna) and is the heart of the artistic and religious attraction.
The place history has very ancient origins, as shown by some findings of Etruscan finds. Montovolo is a place of worship since the pagan age, but the modern sanctuary dates back to the 13th century, indeed on the portal is written the date 1211.
The only supernatural known event went back to 1399: during a traditional procession, near the jump of St. Catherine appeared a cross as a fire. At his sight a young man fell on the ground and, after standing up, said that the Madonna had asked him to erect a cross there. Hence, there was the construction of the Edicola della Santa Croce, which is still there.
In the Montovolo area, not so far from the Sanctuary, It stands the Oratory of Santa Caterina which was built as an ex voto by Bologna Crusaders, who were coming back from Damietta crusade.
