The origin of its feeding, held in the past centuries mysterious and still discussed, it has been an object of study since 1700
The Scaffaiolo lake is in the Fanano municipality (Modena province), entirely inside the Regional Park of the Modenese Apennine. Its name seems to belong from “scaffa”, that it means “ground depression”.
It is not a lake of glacial origin, it was created by chemical and physical alteration that allowed the wind and snow erosion to take place. The lake’s water sources are rainwater, melted snow and a aquifer. For this reason, the ground is waterproof.
It can find on its side the most ancient alpine shelter of the Tosco-Emiliano Apennine, the Duke of the Abruzzi Shelter, inaugurated on June 30, 1878.
There is no fish inside the lake, except tadpoles. Because of climate changes, strong winds, often surrounded by fog; during the winter season, the lake is completely covered by snow and ice.
